The Berlin Art Prize is the only award of its kind in Berlin: Launched in 2013 by four cultural producers, it honors contemporary art from Berlin and presents it to a wide audience. From the beginning the initiative aimed to create a community-oriented award, beyond the pre-existent art world economy. The concept is simple, yet singular: open to all, names and career experience are irrelevant, and only the art is taken into consideration.
The Berlin Art Prize exhibition will take place at The Shelf from September 1–28, 2018. The exhibition opening takes place on Friday, August 31, 2018 and the award ceremony will take place on Friday, September 28, 2018, during Berlin Art Week. During the special midnight event, the winners will be announced live and for the first time. The ceremony will be followed by an afterparty. Additionally, the Berlin Art Prize will host a four-week series of discussions, performances, and talks at The Shelf. All exhibition events are open to the public.
THE NOMINEES
Chosen from over 650 Berlin-based applicants through a multi-stage process, the nine nominees selected by the jury are:
Ana Alenso
Arthur Debert
Monika Grabuschnigg
Nina Kurtela
Alanna Lynch
Markues
Doireann O’Malley
Lorenzo Sandoval
Nina Wiesnagrotzki
Of the artists selected by the jury – Pauline Doutreluingne, Övül Durmușoǧlu, Philipp Ekardt, Michaela Melián, and Johannes Paul Raether – and presented in the exhibition, three will be chosen as winners of the Berlin Art Prize. The three winning artists will be awarded a trophy created for the occasion by Berlin-based artist Zuzanna Czebatul, prize money, and a four-week residency in Marrakech, Morocco.
The exhibition will present a broad spectrum of artistic positions – including sculpture, installation, ceramics, performance, video, and conceptual art. With its sizable rooms, the location allows the exhibition to focus on nominee’s individual artistic practices, with multiple works from each artist.
